Understanding Fragrance Notes: What Are Top Notes, Heart Notes, and Base Notes - Perfumes600

Your perfumes are made of different aromatic components, top notes, heart notes, and base notes — just like the music. These notes are the ingredients of your perfume that evolve at different times. However, they blend together to create a balance and a seamless progression of the fragrance. Knowing about these notes can help you select the right perfume for you that you have been always looking for.

1) WHAT ARE TOP NOTES?

Top notes are also called ‘light’ notes because their molecules evaporate quickly. They give the initial burst of the fragrance, that is why they are responsible for the first impression of the perfume. Within less than an hour, they evolve into heart notes.

2) WHAT ARE HEART NOTES?

Heart notes emerge when the top nodes start fading away, and complete them to create a smooth transition. Heart notes also known as the middle notes are the personality or essence of a perfume. While top notes are usually 10% to 30% of the perfume, the heart notes can be more than 60% of the perfume. Since they are heavier than top notes, they last longer — usually up to several hours.

3) WHAT ARE BASE NOTES?

The base notes are the last impression of your perfume. They emerge when the heart notes start to fade and blend with its remnants. They add depth to the fragrance and determine the longevity — how long it will last on your skin. They are usually 20% to 40% of the perfume.
